Many patients who have lost one or more teeth are opting to get dental implants for restorative care. Dr. Siny Thomas is a highly skilled dentist in Sugar Land, TX who is qualified to perform these implant procedures using the newest technology. Our office believes that the more you know about this and other dental procedures, the more comfortable you will be when undergoing treatment.

Understanding Implants

Dental implants are a permanent solution for lost teeth. Dr. Thomas will evaluate a patient using state-of-the-art imaging to determine if implant surgery is a viable option.  An outpatient procedure is scheduled to remove the affected tooth and to implant titanium screws into the jawbone.

After you have healed from the implant, you can follow-up with Dr. Thomas in order to have your permanent crown placed on the implant. If it is a single tooth, it most likely will be a fixed crown. If you have multiple teeth next to each other, you may have a removable plate, much like a more traditional bridge.

Things to Remember

Having implants can be an ideal solution for your restorative need because they look and function more like your natural teeth. How long the treatment takes from start to finish is determined on a case by case basis. Some factors to consider are:

·         The amount of bone mass you have. Some patients may require bone grafting to provide a solid base for the implant.

·         If you have other medical conditions or you smoke. Your ability to heal quickly can be compromised by your overall health.

·         Recovery can last a few months.  Before your permanent crowns are placed, you need time for your bone to grow together with the implant in order to handle the force from chewing.

·         Your compliance with recommended follow-up care. This may include avoiding hard or crunchy foods as you heal from the implants.
