If you are in fact suffering from TMJ disorder, Dr. Thomas may recommend an occlusal adjustment — the removal of a very thin top layer of the chewing surface of your teeth. Prior to beginning this procedure, Dr. Thomas will ask you to bite down on a piece of mylar color-transfer paper, which will allow him to see where your upper and lower teeth are and are not touching. This method renders bite misalignment more apparent, and enables Dr. Thomas to address any areas where interference is occurring. An occlusal adjustment will allow for your teeth to properly align, and your mouth to close more comfortably once again.
